NCU invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scientist - Physical Oceanographer and/or Ocean and Air-Sea Coupled Modeler:
National Central University (NCU) invites applications for a postdoctoral scientist position in the newly established Advanced Taiwan Ocean Prediction(ATOP) group at the Institute of Hydrological & Oceanic Sciences (IHOS).
The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of research to understand ocean circulation and air-sea coupled processes through mathematical modeling and observational data analyses focusing on the North Pacific Ocean and the Western North Pacific Marginal Seas and coastal zones. The candidate must hold a PhD in physical science: physical oceanography, atmospheric science or equivalent; basic knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamics or fluid mechanics and some numerical modeling experience are desirable. The candidate is also expected to be familiar with basic data analysis techniques, with analysis tools such as MATLAB and/or IDL, and with FORTRAN. IHOS/ATOP is committed to rigorous research and learning, and NCU offers excellent opportunities for multi-disciplinary cross-collaboration with world-class scientists in biogeochemical oceanography, atmospheric and hydrological sciences and adaptive data analyses. We are looking for a candidate with a strong sense of independence and a curiosity and a natural keenness for learning and exploring new ideas. The successful candidate will be encouraged and expected to publish their scientific findings in international journals. She or he will work under the direction of Leo Oey.

Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher in surge and wave modeling

The Davidson Laboratory/Center for Maritime Systems at Stevens Institute of Technology (www.stevens.edu/cms/ ) has several new projects in storm surge hazard assessment and coastal adaptation, with a focus on the New York and New Jersey coastal zone. We are seeking to immediately fill a position at the research scientist or post-doctoral associate level. A Ph.D. in physical oceanography or a related field is required, as well as experience with wave and surge modeling and submitted or accepted peer-reviewed publications in these areas. Coastal ocean modeling experience is a requirement and experience with ADCIRC, ECOM, SWAN/UNSWAN, is highly desirable. Programming skill in Matlab, Fortran, Python or other languages is required.
With the rapid expansion of our program before Hurricane Sandy, as well as expected expansion due to the impact of the storm and multiple submitted research proposals, we expect to have funding for additional years with this research position. However, the initial appointment will be for one year, with renewal and upward advancement conditional upon performance and availability of funding.

Tenure Track Faculty Position in Physical Oceanography

The Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Old Dominion University (http://sci.odu.edu/oceanography/) invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Physical Oceanography. Preference will be given to candidates with research interests and field experience making observations in the coastal ocean. We seek candidates with excellent communications skills that can demonstrate a strong potential for outstanding accomplishments in research and teaching and in working in a multi-disciplinary environment. In addition to excellence in scholarly research, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the department’s overall curriculum through formal course offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate students pursuing MS and PhD degrees.

Qualifications for the appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor include a PhD in oceanography or related science with postdoctoral experience preferred. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor will be considered for candidates demonstrating of an exceptional track record of scholarly independence, an active research program and commensurate teaching experience.

Many opportunities exist for disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions with more than 25 other faculty in OEAS, its Centers for Coastal Physical Oceanography (http://www.ccpo.odu.edu ) and Quantitative Fisheries Ecology and other departments within the university. An endowment of approximately $16 million provides additional support for departmental programs.
